A Respitality Story from North Argyll
Here is a Respitality experience as told by both the carer who took the break, and the business who donated:
Frank cares for his wife with physical disabilities. They live on a Scottish Island, and took a break at the Old Manse Guesthouse in Oban.
“I was looking forward to the break as things had been hectic with my wife’s changing conditions.” said Frank “I am so grateful to the Old Manse guesthouse for their generosity.”
Reflecting on what he enjoyed most about his break, Frank said “I really enjoyed being able to take a day off from the household chores. The view from our room was also beautiful. I now feel so refreshed! But what was of great benefit, was being on the mainland and being able to enjoy the leisure facilities without having to rush for a ferry.”
Anna and Simon Smith, owners of the Old Manse guesthouse also reflected on their experience of donating the break to Frank. “From being involved with the Respitality service we have seen first hand how much the breaks away are appreciated. We see people arrive a little nervous, tired and stressed and leave with a smile on their face. Although it is a small time in their world of being a carer it is clear that the time completely away lets them relax and recharge in a way that is hard to do whilst being in their caring routine.
“We support Respitality because we know from experience of friends and family how little time carers get for themselves and how much a break is appreciated, and by participating in Respitality we feel we are giving something back to the local community by using the ‘asset’ we have; in our case a guest house. We would like to say thank you to North Argyll Carers Centre for working closely with us and the carer to arrange the break.”
